Human Rights & Criminal Justice

1-IMG_0365The Human Rights/Criminal Justice Working Group advocates for the following:

  • Adherence to the human rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • Abolition of the death penalty
  • Restructuring the criminal justice system to eliminate racial, economic and geographic biases
  • Replacing the current “retributive” justice system with a “restorative” justice system
  • An end to long-term solitary confinement
  • An end to private, for-profit prisons
  • An end to sentencing policies that lead to mass incarceration
  • An end to the “school to prison pipeline” and the incarceration of youth in adult prisons
  • Using tickets and non-monetary bonds for nonviolent crimes
  • Instituting policies and procedures to end police brutality
  • Improved funding of effective crime prevention programs
  • Immigration reform including an end to the practice of arresting and deporting people who are nonviolent
  • An end to human trafficking
  • Improved gun safety laws
